Jobe EVO Wakeboard Binding

Human-Material Interaction, Wakeboarding
About This Project

As part of his graduation project, Lennart Weerts developed a new type of wakeboard binding. He then started working at Jobe to further develop the new design. The product has now been officially launched as the Jobe EVO – short for Evolution. Not only does it offer good stability, comfort and control, the binding is also highly customisable for each individual.

Manufacturers of extreme sports equipment are constantly seeking to provide the user with both ultimate adrenaline and a feeling of safety and control. These factors drive manufacturers to conducting ongoing research in order to develop the perfect equipment that meets all demands. Wakeboarding is trend sensitive and user demands are high, not only on performance and safety but also on aesthetics.

Dutch company Jobe Sports International has been manufacturing wakeboarding gear since the beginning. Within the Jobe product category of wakeboarding, several developments took place over the last couple of years such as new shapes of the boards and the use of new core materials. However, the design of the wakeboard bindings did not change during this period of time in contrast to other brands that released different innovations in binding design. Some flaws were discovered in the current design, including too large of a gap between the riders’ foot and the board, a bulky look and a weakening of ankle support over time.

The newly designed Jobe EVO consists of two main parts: a binding combined with a separated sneaker. The binding, consisting of a frame and an interchangeable skin, forms an external skeleton that fixes the sneaker to the wakeboard by making use of a revolutionary new connection technique. The sneaker is equipped with a stiff heel compartment, a thermo formable liner and an insole following the contours of the users’ feet.
